Over-skimming & skimming onto plasterboard

Over-skimming & skimming onto plasterboard

A thin coat of plaster is applied to the walls using the skimming process to achieve the smooth surface needed for painting or decoration.

About skimming

Waving good-bye to all those ugly flakes, lumps, and bumps and saying "hi" to new, smooth surfaces is the ultimate makeover you can offer your wall. In essence, skimming is a plastering method.

Using this method, you cover the wall with a thin coating of plaster to create a smooth, level surface that will enable you to paint and adorn the blank canvas you have created.

How does skimming differ to plastering?

Traditional plastering is a lengthy and intricate technique that requires three distinct layers of plaster to cure before applying the next coat. Plastering has evolved to suit new demands as deadlines have tightened and time has become more valuable. With only one coat of skim plaster to apply, the plasterer's task may now be completed in a fraction of the time previously required.

Do my walls need skimming?

It's crucial to keep in mind that not all walls require skimming. You won't need to apply this method if the plaster that now covers the surface of the walls is in good shape, that is, smooth and free of cracks and indentations.

However, it is advised that you skim your walls before painting and decorating if they are somewhat uneven, have cracks, or other imperfections. This will allow for a truly clean, professional finish and offer an additional layer of soundproofing to the space in question.

What are the benefits of skimming?

Cost saving

Even though a skim coating requires more work, it is inexpensive and simpler for everyone to apply. It is the ideal technique to "replace" your current texture if you don't like it without having to pay for earlier work.

Smooth surface

You can create a smooth surface if you skim coat your wall or ceiling. You can print to the wall or ceiling more easily as a result, and your print appears smoother and brighter.

Essential for glossy paints

If you're using glossy, shining paint, employing a skim coat is essential to achieve a great finish; without skim coating, the entire surface will seem deformed and rough, especially if the colour being used is glossy.

Shiny paint makes bumpy and uneven surfaces more noticeable. Even the smallest imperfections that you assumed paint would be able to cover may end up appearing ugly since priming and paint cannot adequately conceal them.

Makes painting and decorating easy

The skim coating facilitates and improves the consistency of wall painting. Without any uneven areas or flaking paint to work over, the paintbrush glides over the smooth, clean walls.

While printing directly on drywall could result in a sticky and unpleasant procedure, using a skim coat will make printing easier and produce a smoother, brighter finish.

“Great job overboarding and skimming our hallway and utility ceilings, and replacing the coving. The whole team was friendly, polite and professional. Parts of the coving were far from easy due to the quirks of our old house, and Freddy wouldn't rest til it was done right. Thank you!”
