Skimming in Leeds for tired or uneven surfaces.
Skimming applies a thin finishing coat of plaster to a properly prepared wall or ceiling, creating the smooth surface needed for a professional decorative result.
It can refresh suitable existing plaster or finish newly installed plasterboard. We inspect the background first, carry out the appropriate preparation and explain if repairs, boarding or a base coat are needed before skimming can begin.
- Smooth finish across walls and ceilings
- Suitable for prepared existing plaster or new board
- Clean surface ready for painting and decorating

Skimming for existing walls and fresh plasterboard.
The preparation changes with the background. The goal stays the same: an even plaster finish that gives decorating the best possible start.
Over-skimming existing plaster
Suitable existing walls and ceilings are assessed, repaired where needed and prepared before receiving a new finishing coat.
Skimming fresh plasterboard
New board is jointed and prepared before the finish is applied across the surface for consistent walls and ceilings.
Rooms ready for decorating
A smooth skim gives matt, satin and higher-sheen finishes a cleaner foundation once the plaster is fully dry.
Start with the condition of the surface.
Not every imperfect wall should be skimmed immediately.
The existing plaster needs to be sound enough to receive the new finish. Loose areas, movement, damp, deeper damage or unsuitable coatings may need attention first, while badly uneven walls may require boarding or a base coat rather than skim alone.
We inspect the background and recommend the preparation it actually needs before quoting for the finish.
Careful preparation, then a consistent finish.
- 01
Assess the walls or ceilings
We check the existing finish or plasterboard, identify repairs and confirm whether skimming is the right approach.
- 02
Protect the room
Floors, furniture and nearby surfaces are protected before preparation and plastering begin.
- 03

Loose material and defects are dealt with, joints are prepared where required and the surface receives the appropriate treatment.
- 04
Apply and flatten the skim
The finishing plaster is applied methodically and worked across the surface to create a consistent plane.
- 05
Finish and tidy
We refine the plaster, clear the work area and explain drying time and when the new surface can be decorated.

“They repaired a door opening where patio doors had been removed and patched a few areas of cracked plaster. Freddy was very responsive and easy to work with.”
“The whole team was friendly, polite and professional. Parts of the coving were far from easy, and Freddy would not rest until it was done right.”
“They always leave the house immaculately clean and are very respectful workers. Thanks for the great work.”
Useful answers before you skim.
Send photographs or arrange a visit and we will explain whether your walls need skimming, repairs, boarding or a different preparation.
What is skimming?
Skimming is the application of a thin finishing coat of plaster to a properly prepared wall or ceiling. It creates a smooth surface ready for painting or decorating once fully dry.
Can you skim over existing plaster?
Yes, when the existing plaster is sound and the surface is suitable. We inspect it first and complete the preparation needed to help the new finish adhere properly.
Can you skim directly onto plasterboard?
Fresh plasterboard can be skimmed after its joints, fixings and edges have been properly prepared. The finishing coat then creates one consistent surface across the boards.
Does skimming fix every crack or uneven wall?
No. Cracks, movement, loose plaster, damp and deeper damage may need to be dealt with before skimming. We will explain the right repair rather than cover an underlying problem.
How long should I wait before painting new plaster?
The plaster must be completely dry before decoration. Drying time varies with ventilation, temperature and the amount of plaster applied. Your first paint coat should follow the paint manufacturer's guidance for new plaster.
Can I get a quote before agreeing to anything?
Of course. We provide a clear quote before anything is agreed and make sure you are comfortable with the proposed work before it begins.
